South Lake Union
South Lake Union, SLU is an urban redevelopment project in downtown Seattle consisting of office, retail, restaurants, hotels residential and cultural venues. In collaboration with Miller Hull architects, the team designed a Leed certified modular building to house a Discovery Center, more commonly known as the “disco”, to provide a consumer experience that communicates the vision of South Lake Union to the public. The visitor experience starts with a historical timeline of downtown Seattle including “time capsules” holding artifacts donated by Paul Allen and the Bill Gates Foundation. A 26′ diameter theater takes visitors into the future of SLU and opens to a 16′ long scale model of downtown Seattle. A model home vignette for a high-rise condo utilizes a projection screen display that emulates floor to ceiling windows with a video display of the city views from day to night. The SLU Discovery Center won numerous awards for its innovative and sustainable design.
